US Navy's largest helicopter touches down on HMS Queen Elizabeth

V-22 Osprey Two iconic war-birds have made their debuts on the flight deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth. The MV-22 Osprey transport helicopter with its two unique tilt-rotor blades at the extremes of its ‘wings’ has touched down on the UK’s newest aircraft carrier for the first time. That was after the mammoth MH-53E Sea Dragon, the United States Navy’s biggest helicopter, also sat its considerable weight down on the flight deck. This follows the first appearance of F-35 Lightning fighter jets on the carrier last month. Flight trials for the jets are ongoing off the east coast of the United States, where the 65,000-tonne warship is currently on a deployment called Westlant 18. The helicopters’ visit gave Queen Elizabeth’s aircraft handlers the opportunity to work with the US aircraft and means they can now operate from the British carrier. Commander James Blackmore is the Commander Air – also known as ‘Wings’ – on board HMS Queen Elizabeth and is in charge of flight operations. He said: “Pro

F-35 pilot makes history with revolutionary method of landing jets on HMS Queen Elizabeth

British test pilot Peter Wilson made history when he conducted the first ever ship-borne rolling vertical landing (SRVL) this weekend – a method which looks like a conventional aircraft landing but requires even more intense skill and precision. Previously the jets have conducted only vertical landings, hovering by the side of the ship before moving sideways over the deck and gently lowering down. A rolling landing however requires the jet to make a more conventional landing approach, approaching the ship from behind at speed, before using thrust from its nozzle and lift created by air over the wings to touch down and gently come to a stop. “I’ve flown more than 2,000 SRVLs in the simulator, and am honoured to have been able to do the first one on board HMS Queen Elizabeth.” As important as the pilot in the cockpit was the Royal Navy’s Lieutenant Christopher Mould, the ship’s Landing Safety Officer.
